New Charging Port, Nov 21, 2021

Had some trouble with the cutoff switch staying in place in the original charger port on/off switch and location so i bought a new switchable C14 port for charger use. This piece is fused and good up to 240v and 10 amps. a bit overkill for my 72v system but i like the idea of the charging port not being live all of the time.

Picture of the new charging connection (C14 style) along with the 2-point mounting bracket that fits under the right side panel.

Getting Towed, June 8, 2021

So I take the bike the on first ride to work and guess what happenns? C’mon, guess. If you read the title and said, “you got towed” you would be correct. After about 20 miles of test rides including 5 into work the sprocket set screws and key managed to work themselves out by Grant and Oracle. At least there was a turn off where i could pull over and figure out what was going on. What was going on was they key came out and the shaft just turned inside the sprocket. Ugh. one thing i did not have tools to fix the problem.

Waiting for tow truck, note the rubber cover and cardboard battery covers.

The KZ550 has died

I was attempting to leave a meeting last Monday afternoon & when i went to start the bike it idled for about 30 seconds & then cut out.  It took a few attempts to get it started again & while i was having to hold the throttle open at least it was running & at least it was almost entirely downhill to my house.  But … while it ran like crap with the choke on there was an awful noise coming from the left side of the engine.  A nice high pitched clanging noise to be a bit more precise.

So what do i do?  I get the bike home with this loud noise coming from the engine & wondering what to do exactly.  A few googled & y0utube searches later & I’m thinking it could be a bad carb/lost cyclinder.  Next steps a) take the carbs off, b) take the ignition coils off, c) take the camshaft cover off, d) take the camshafts out, e) take the cylinder head section out, f), start posting pics about the condition of the bike & what the heck i’m going to do now.
